Homestead Newsletter

This is the same newsletter Homestead sends out every month or so to its e-mail list members.  Same text, same typos.  The most recent one is first, but older newsletters are also shown.  We just wanted to share it with everyone.  If you'd like to get on the aforementioned e-mail list, send an e-mail to Marv at folkmuse@aol.com with your snail mail and electronic addresses as well as a phone number. We'll make sure the next issue heads your way.  The SUBJECT LINE should be PLEASE ADD ME TO YOUR E-MAIL LIST.  That'll do it.

July 3, 2010

1.  R.I.P. Bill Hinkley
2.  Flint Hill Banjos and now Guitars
3.  New Releases/Arrivals
4.  Spider John Koerner film premier
5.  Under the radar

1.  R.I.P. BILL HINKLEY

One may 25, the world of music and the world at large (although it probably barely took notice - there was no mention at the G20 conference), lost a giant as Bill Hinkley succumbed to the blood disorder that had been plaguing him for the last several years.

We were more than proud to list Bill among the roster of outstanding instructors at The Pickin' Parlor.   He taught here on Thursdays and from the time he signed on, Thursdays were never the same.  And we're not too excited about going back to the old ones.

Bill Hinkley and Judy Larson were mainstays of the Minnesota acoustic music community for more than four decades.  There's was a life partnership as well as a musical partnership.  We'll all have to lean a little more heavily on Judy now and I'm sure she'll keep a steady hand on the music rudder for us for the foreseeable future.

Bill's departure will not be allowed to pass without a gathering of friends unlike anything seen before and one that will likely not be replicated in the years ahead.  Next Wednesday, July 7, all interested person will gather at the Nicollet Island Pavilion located at 40 Power Street in Minneapolis for you G.P.S. buffs (that's on the East end of Nicollet Island for you dead reckoners).  The gathering will go on from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m..  There will be a program at the outset followed by as much music as can be fit in the time allotted.  Hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar will be available.

Donations to defray the expense of this gathering may be made on the night of the celebration or you may send them in advance to Judy Larson at 1015 20th Ave NE, Minneapolis, MN 55418.  Or you can send money via PayPal as a gift to
pegheads@aol.com
Many thanks to MJ Mueller and Judy Larson who have done the heavy lifting in putting this gathering together, ably assisted by Adam Granger, Dakota Dave Hull, and Pop Wagner just to name a few.  Volunteers will be needed and welcomed on the day of the event and you can contact MJ at
mj_mueller@hotmail.com to indicate your willingness to help.

To keep abreast of the planning for this event and to have one wonderful trip through time looking back on the contributions of Bill and Judy, there is a Facebook page to check out.  It is the "Friends of Bill Hinkley and Judy Larson" page.  In case you forget the exact title, go to our Facebook page and check out our "Favorite Places.

2. FLINT HILL BANJOS AND NOW GUITARS

We have mentioned the Flint Hill (ne Recording King) banjos in the last couple of newsletters.  These banjos are incredible bargains and we have just four left.  I am told by our supplier that they have received what will probably be the last shipment.

But now it's on to guitars.  We this week received our shipment of Flint Hill guitars.  Again, these were originally to have been Recording King guitars but due to the lethargy in the guitar business for Recording King, the factory is fire selling them to clear the decks.  As with the banjos, you're the winner.  In 30 years, we have not seen instrument bargains that begin to compete with the Flint Hills.

We have three models of the guitars in the house.  They are all dreadnought size bodies and all come with a hardshell case.  All have mahogany necks with a dovetail neck joint and have adjustable truss rods.  Fretboards and bridges are of rosewood.   Fretboard inlays are abalone pearl.  They are of standard 1 11/16" neck width at the nut and have a 25.4" scale length.  14 Frets to the body.  All are equipped with traditional butterbean tuning machines.  They all have bound bodies and the top bracing is of the pre-war forward-X design and is fully scalloped.  Both the nut and saddle are of bone.

The first model is the Flint Hill FHG-16.  It has a solid Engelmann spruce top and laminated mahogany back and sides.  The price with the hardshell case is $290.00.  The FHG-26 also has a solid Engelmann spruce top but the sides and back are of solid African Mahogany.  With the hardshell case, the FHG-26 sells for $360.00.  The final model on hand is the FHG-27.  This model touts a solid Engelmann spruce top with solid Indian Rosewood back & sides.  The price of the FHG-27 with hardshell case is $440.00.  As with the banjos, we invite you to compare with guitars at twice to three times the price.  We don't know how long they will be available to us but we have only two of each model on hand.  A word to the wise is sufficient.   Don't delay if you have a guitar on your wish list for the near future.

3.  NEW RELEASES

There has been an incredible number of new releases that have crossed our threshold since we last listed them. As we always do, the titles listed below will be available for $2.00 off the prices shown until the next newsletter listing new releases.  There's no doubt that CD sales are lower than they were ten years ago but listeners to folk music are less likely to be enamored with the high tech hoopla and still know how to enjoy listening to a CD carefully compiled and produced by and artist with you the listener in mind.  Here's the list.

4. SPIDER JOHN KOERNER FILM PREMIER

July, 10, 2009 found Spider John Koerner playing in a most unlikely venue in Southwest North Dakota.  The concert had been arranged and was documented by film director, Digger Kohler.  The resulting film, "Spider John Koerner at The Logging Camp Ranch" will have its premier at Intermedia Arts located at 2822 Lyndale Ave S in Minneapolis on July 10, 2010.  There will be a social hour from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. followed by a showing of the film.  Spider John will be the guest of honor, Digger Kohler will be your host.

A Dux N' Geez Production, this film is the third in a series of viceo documentaries of Twin Cities music legends released by Kohler.  Earlier films featured John Beach and Willie Murphy.

The Koerner concert footage was recorded at John and Jennifer Hanson's Logging Camp Ranch.  14 of John's most memorable songs are served up with a generous portion of the noted Koerner humor.  It's sure to delight any Koerner fan.  The bonus provided by some spectacular background scenery of the North Dakota Badlands makes the concert even more memorable.  In Digger's words from the liner notes, he set out to "document performances in settings as exceptional and uncontrived as the music.,

The concert was held on what appears to be the deck of one of the ranch buildings.  A most generous deck to be sure, but space available did limit the size of the audience, but those in attendance were most appreciative and will certainly be envied by anyone viewing the film.  Digger spared no horses on the sound and camera a work.  It's as good as being there without having to undertake the thirteen hour drive involved.

The concert was shot over a span of many hours and while it starts in broad daylight, by the end of the performance, darkness has settled in on the ranch.  The amateur astronomer in John comes out at one point as he casts his eyes skyward and allows as how there'll be some star-gazing to be had after the performance.  Digger thought ahead and lighting is provided as darkness settles in.

The on-camera introduction of Koerner by Digger is a little spare in terms of telling the audience about the impact that the music of John Koerner and Koerner, Ray & Glover had on the twentieth century popular music scene.  The liner notes for the DVD lead us to believe that they had been adequately prepared, however, and the flip side is that the intro doesn't detract from the performance.

The film is about fifty minutes in length.  It is our understanding that copies of the DVD will be available that evening while the supply lasts.  Any follower of folk and popular music of the last one hundred years and the impact that Minnesotans had on that music, should have a cop of this DVD in their library.

Did we mention the admission - a paltry $5.00.  Downright reasonable - see you there!

5. UNDER THE RADAR

Two bluegrass concerts right here in the City of Richfield to make you aware of.

On Wednesday, July 14, Blue Wolf will be performing a the Richfield Historical Society's Bartholomew House located at 6901 Lyndale Ave S.  It's free and open to the public.   The band starts playing at 7:00 p.m..  This concert is sponsored by The Homestead Pickin' Parlor and the Richfield Historical Society.

One week later on July 21, Oak Grove Lutheran Church will present Monroe Crossing
in concert at Veteran's Memorial Park located on the East side of Portland Avenue at 64th Street.  The concert will be held under the shelter and will begin at 7:00 p.m..  This is also a free and open to the public event.

Could Richfield be becoming the summer bluegrass capitol of Minnesota suburbs?

Hope to see you soon.  Pass this newsletter on to others you think may be interested and encourage them to subscribe.  And we're also on the web at www. Homesteadpickinparlor.com and you can now find us on Facebook to keep up with what's happening around here in between newsletters.  And remember, there's nothing like folk music to make an economic downturn pass quickly.  Have a safe and happy Fourth of July.

April 5, 2010

The big news, of course, is we're celebrating "National Steve Kaufman's in Richfield, MN week" at The Homestead Pickin' Parlor.  Steve, the best known and most widely published instructor of guitar and mandolin today, will be making the trek from his home in Alcoa, TN to conduct workshops and perform in concert this week.  There is still a few spaces available in Steve's workshops and there are still concert tickets available and we would recommend jumping into this opportunity with both feet.  Here's the week's lineup of educational opportunities:

Thursday, April 8 - Mandolin Rhythm Workshop 7:00 P.M.
Mandolin players will get the first shot at Steve.  This workshop will cover basic to intermediate chord forms and see how they move around on the fretboard.  Steve will go over chops, timing, notes, etc.  Some basic knowledge of the mandolin is helpful but not required.

Bring an audio recorder, mandolin, and as many questions as you can carry.  The workshop fee is $45.00 and it is limited to 20 students.  Reservations are being accepted at present.

Friday, April 9 - Beginner and Intermediate Mandolin Lead Workshop - 7:00 P.M.
Not so fast, mandolin player.  You've taken the Rhythm workshop, where you going to go from there?  This workshop is your next step.  Steve will work on fingerings, how to add new songs to your repertoire, learning by tab and learning by ear.  With these two workshops under your belt, the only thing between you and stage performance is wood-shedding.

Once again, bring your tape recorder, your instrument, and as many questions as you can fit in its case.  The workshop fee is $45.00 and space is limited to 20 students.  You can reserve your spot now.

As we did last year, we are offering the "Teach Me and Teach Me Now" discount to mandolin players.  Both workshops for $80.00.

Saturday, April 10 - Beginning and Intermediate Flatpicking Workshop - 9:30 AM
So you want to challenge Steve's status as the only three-Time National Flatpicking Champion, eh?  Frankly, Steve isn't as young as he was when he started offering this workshop thirteen years ago, so you might just have a shot.  And he's more than happy to give you a hand.  This is the workshop where he'll give you all the information you need to take a run at it.

During this intensive six hour workshop, Steve will concentrate on both right and left hand techniques.  The objective is to gain better control and to learn how to assimilate new tunes and add new chords to your repertoire.  This workshop will also be limited to 20 Students.  The workshop fee is $90.00 and reservations are being accepted.

Saturday, April 10 - Steve Kaufman & Adam Granger in concert -8:00 P.M.
For you workshop attendees, here's your opportunity to sit back and relax and hear the master team up with fellow flatpicker par excellence, Adam Granger.  It will be a delightful evening without a doubt but for those of you who are thinking of that challenge to Steve's status, it will also show you that the years have been kind to Steve.  He's still got it.  Just that much more woodshedding for you.

The concert will be held in the Armatage School Auditorium located at 2501 West 56th Street.  Tickets are $15.00 in advance or $18.00 on the day of the concert. They will be available later this week.

Sunday, April 11, Upper Intermediate/Advance Flatpicking Workshop - 12;00 Noon
For the last several years, as the roster of Steve Kaufman workshop attendees has grown, we've asked him to offer this workshop as a capper on the week's activities.  After you've gotten the basics of the flatpicking technique under control, what do you need to know to kick it up a notch?  Here's where you get your answer to that question.

Right & Left hand techniques to get better control, new tunes and new chords will be covered.  In this workshop, Steve Kaufman lays his flatpicking soul bare.  There is nothing more he can offer.  It's up to you from this point.  A $45.00 workshop fee will hold your place.  Once again we're limited as to space so reserve early.  Audio Recorder, Guitar and questions are in order.

WE'RE NOW ON FACEBOOK.  No, it's not a result of the earthquake in Baja, California and we're definitely not becoming techno-geeks, but we have kicked at the traces of Ludditism.  Paul Hatch blazed the way when he started the Homestead Pickin' Parlor ‘Preciation Society Facebook Group from his Facebook profile some months ago.   It seems there's been some interest in that group, so we have started our own page.   Paul will continue to manage the group page and will play a role in keeping our page up to date.  We'll try not to have duplication between the two efforts, but stop by when you get a chance and if you like what you see, become a fan.  The information on the Facebook page will be different from what you receive in the newsletter and you get a chance to provide us some feedback on Facebook.  We'll also keep you informed of the goings on at Homestead via photos.  Go figure!  Our Web Site also continues in force.  People in the know simply say we're going viral.

FLINT HILL BANJOS CONTINUE TO PROLIFERATE.  We thought by now they'd be gone, but we now have six models of Flint Hill (nee Recording King) banjos in stock.  These are the best buys in banjos that we've experienced in our thirty years.  If you're either a beginner wanting more than a beginning banjo are an intermediate player looking to make a step up, these Flint Hill banjos put you in a professional quality instrument at half the price you would expect to pay.  They all have 20-Hole Flathead Bronze tone rings, One piece cast flanges and three-ply maple rims.  They come with deluxe hardshell cases.  Hearing is believing and if you're at all in the market, check these out before they disappear.

Well that should be enough to chew on for the moment.  Take advantage of the opportunity to study with Steve Kaufman and/or hear him in concert with Adam Granger.  And, of course, we'll see you in the funny papers, or now on Facebook.  Thanks for being who you are and for your support of acoustic music.
