Shirley Mauch
Spanhanks grew up on a farm near
Mooreton,
ND and took accordion lessons
at the age of 10. Her mother played accordion and instilled a love of the
instrument. Recently, in the fall of 2009, Shirley joined the “Budha
Prince” cast playing accordion in the show about the Dalai Lama. The cast
was invited to perform in Central Park in
New York City,
Powderhorn
Park and at the
Arboretum in Chanhassen. She has played accordion with the 80-member
musical “Texas” in
Palo
Duro
Canyon near
Amarillo,
TX in the summer of 1995.
Shirley performed with The Heart of the Beast’s “On the Day You Were Born”
traveling troupe that went to
Seattle,
Salt Lake City,
Michigan and
Canada. She
also performed on the accordion with the Na Fianna Irish Theatre and
currently plays at many retirement centers and nursing homes.
Shirley started
playing guitar around 1979, and took flatpicking guitar lessons from Adam
Granger. In 1997, she received a folk art apprentice grant to study with
Adam Granger and was able to concentrate on playing the guitar. Shirley
went down to
South
Plains
College from 1994-96
getting an AA degree in commercial music. Shirley took 1st place
in the Senior division in 2008, at the Flatpicking Contest at the MN State
Fair.
Currently, Shirley
is giving accordion and guitar lessons. |
