Guitar and Piano Accordion

Call Homestead
to schedule lessons

Shirley Mauch Spanhanks grew up on a farm near Mooreton, ND and took accordion lessons at the age of 10.  Her mother played accordion and instilled a love of the instrument.  Recently, in the fall of 2009, Shirley joined the “Budha Prince” cast playing accordion in the show about the Dalai Lama.  The cast was invited to perform in Central Park in New York City, Powderhorn Park and at the Arboretum in Chanhassen.  She has played accordion with the 80-member musical “Texas” in Palo Duro Canyon near Amarillo, TX in the summer of 1995.  Shirley performed with The Heart of the Beast’s “On the Day You Were Born” traveling troupe that went to Seattle, Salt Lake City, Michigan and Canada.  She also performed on the accordion with the Na Fianna Irish Theatre and currently plays at many retirement centers and nursing homes.

Shirley started playing guitar around 1979, and took flatpicking guitar lessons from Adam Granger.  In 1997, she received a folk art apprentice grant to study with Adam Granger and was able to concentrate on playing the guitar.  Shirley went down to South Plains College from 1994-96 getting an AA degree in commercial music.  Shirley took 1st place in the Senior division in 2008, at the Flatpicking Contest at the MN State Fair.

Currently, Shirley is giving accordion and guitar lessons.
